Volkswagen Vento India Official pics

Volkswagen has finally unveiled the Vento sedan at Delhi earlier this afternoon. The Volkswagen Vento would reach showrooms by October 2010.

The Vento sedan has been launched with 2 engines on offer a 1.6 liter petrol engine and 1.6 liter diesel engine and only the petrol engine would get a 6-speed automatic transmission as an option. The Vento would be offered in only two trim levels, Trendline and Highline.

The base version we feel is crippled for a car that is playing in this segment. It lacks essentials like body coloured handles and mirrors and comes only in two colors, red and white.

Pricing details haven’t been revealed but we expect Volkswagen to price the Vento between 7.25 to 9 lakh Rupees.

Ford India ships first lot of Figos to South Africa

Ford Figo South Africa Export

Ford India has begun exports of its ultra-successful small car Figo by shipping out the first lot of 1,200 Made-In-India Figos to South Africa. The Figo is the first small car to be produced and exported by Ford India.

Michael Boneham, President and Managing Director, Ford India -

In addition to being a sales chart topper, the Ford Figo is the first small car to be produced and exported by Ford India and today’s consignment of 1,200 Figos to South Africa is a new exciting development for us. Given the rising demand worldwide for compact vehicles, we plan to accelerate our export strategy to not only enhance our business growth but also to further embellish India’s reputation as a major regional auto manufacturing hub

Ford will be exporting the 1.4-litre Duratec petrol and 1.4-litre Duratorq diesel engined Ford Figos to Ford Motor Company of South Africa, which will start deliveries of the cars in mid-July through its network of 123 dealerships.

Boneham added -

Just as the Figo has taken the Indian market by storm, we are confident that it will have a similar impact in South Africa and we hope to export 5,000 vehicles to the country by the end of the year

The Figo has been a huge success for Ford in India, with the car having received more than 24,000 bookings. The car has set Ford India’s sales charts on fire with the company reporting a 267 % jump in sales for the month of June 2009.

Ford also exports its Made-In-India Fiesta sedan and diesel engines to Ford South Africa and this latest consignment of 1,200 Ford Figos should go a long a way in bolstering the export relationship between Ford India and Ford South Africa.

Bugatti Veyron

The Bugatti Veyron can travel over 400kph. It has over 1000hp. It has 16 cylinders and many turbochargers.

But isn’t it a car at the end of the day? And what ever affects our run-of-the-mill car, can wreak havoc even on a 17+ crore rupee car.

Like for example a flat tire. How much do you think it will cost to fix a flat tire? Or let me put this this way -

Which car can you buy with the money that goes into fixing a Bugatti Veyron’s flat tire?

New Porsche Cayenne could be assembled in India

Porsche Cayenne

As we reported earlier Porsche would be launching the 2011 Cayenne in India at the end of this month. Prices are expected to start at approx 65 lakhs and go all the way up to 1.2 crores.

Reports suggest that the company is now planning to locally assemble the car at Volkswagen’s Chakan plant. Sources indicate that the company is contemplating on taking the CKD route for its SUV which is currently imported as a CBU from Porsche’s plant in Germany & thus attracts high import duties.

This would bring down the cost of the Cayenne drastically as the import duty would go down from the current 113% to 40%.

Ashish Chordia, CEO of Porsche India -

Porsche stands for ‘Made in Germany’ quality, and currently there are no plans of either assembling or manufacturing Porsches in India

The Porsche Cayenne accounts for 65% of the total sales of the company & is thus a significant model. Archrival Land Rover is contemplating on locally assembling their SUV’s. Porsche could very well take advantage of their parents’ plant in Chakan for assembling the Cayenne in order to give it a competitive price tag. If this happens, it would India would be the 1st place outside Germany to assemble Porsches.

Fast Facts: Airbags

Airbags IAB facts

1. Airbags were first offered by GM in America on its luxury vehicles Buick, Cadillac and Oldsmobile. In 1980, Mercedes Benz offered driver side airbags that worked in tandem with seat belt pre-tensioners. Porsche was the first to offer driver side airbags standard on its 944. Airbags are considered to be the most important safety feature in car after the seat belt.

2. Airbags take around 40 milliseconds to inflate fully and would deflate partially in about 100 milliseconds. All happens in a blink of the eye. Airbags have pyrotechnical gas inflators that are triggered by impact sensors.

3. Airbags are safety devices only when the occupant is restrained by a seat belt. If the occupant is not belted up and in case the airbags inflate, the force with which the airbag is inflating could fracture the neck and create severe injuries to the spine. Airbags can even kill when the occupant is not restrained by a seat belt.
