Good news for Toyota lovers. At some point in time, you have had the desire to own the Camry and probably settled for a Corolla. But you know what? Your next car could be the Camry.

Toyota India is seriously thinking about manufacturing it’s luxury sedan Camry here in India. This would bring down its price tag by at least 4 lakh rupees as Toyota needn’t pay for the excise. The Camry range begins at 21-lakh and is fighting for the top spot in the D-Segment which has a market of 8,000 vehicles annually.

If it is eventually made in India, it will compete in a segment lesser- The battleground which will consist of cars like the Hyundai Sonata and Skoda Laura and what’s better is it will have a clear advantage in terms of comfort, features or brand value.

IAB Comment- This will force others to think of locally producing their cars, which will result in cheaper cars and more dreams being realized. It’s a thoughtful move and we approve of it :)

Indigenous production will certainly bring down the price but simultaneously it will also bring down the quality and comfort. In Japan they having the best manufacturing and quality control line. But it is foe certain that if manufactured in India the quality of the vehicle will suffer a down gradation. That’s may be the reason it is being imported as CBU.
Other way, to reduce the price, our govt may also bring down the custom duty which is some extent monopolistic in the era of globalisation thus denying the very right of the citizen to get the value for money and access to the global technology.
This will also help the Indian producers to improve upon their product’s quality to retain their business.

  4. [...] In India, it will be brought through the CBU (Completely Built Unit) route, so obviously, it would burn a hole in the buyer’s pocket. Estimated price is upwards of 40 Lakhs. If the response to this release is in favor of Toyota i.e if expected sales figures are met, the company may even start manufacturing the Landcruiser in India, like they have planned to manufacture the Camry at their Indian plant.
