VW’s sister companies have the reputation of sharing platforms and we think the same mantra will be used on Skoda’s upcoming small car for the Indian market. Every manufacturer is forced to look at fuel-efficient  small cars on the long run and one of the most anticipated small cars from the VW stable is none other than the VW Up!.

When better to use this platform than during this period of ‘recession’ and ‘fuel-crisis’? Good news is that Skoda is planing a new small car and making one to suit the World will be a hefty job. The next best option would be to use the UP! as a base and then make their own and this we think is what Skoda will be doing. This was confirmed when Skoda unveiled the Superb at the Autocar Speed Show being held in Mumbai,India.

Skoda India said it was working on the concept of a small car for the Indian market and other developed markets. “The small car will take three to five years to come,” Skoda India board member Thomas Kuehl said. It would be in the price range of Rs 3-5 lakh, he said. The auto major unveiled its luxury car ‘Superb’ at the Autocar Performance Show 2008. The company did not quote the price of the model as it would be launched in February 2009. Superb was launched in Europe in June. Skoda has sold about 16,000 cars in India since January this year.
